Senate President Godswill Akpabio has been named the recipient of the 2025 International Peace Award by the Global Peace Movement International (GPMI), recognizing his significant contributions to global diplomacy and parliamentary excellence.
The award, to be presented in August 2025, honors Akpabio’s pivotal role in restoring Nigeria’s membership in the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), a position lost over five decades ago, and his leadership as an IPU Executive Member and global Commissioner. GPMI President Dr. Mike Uyi described Akpabio’s efforts as “visionary and transformative,” highlighting his work in elevating Nigeria’s international standing.
Akpabio’s tenure as Senate President since 2023 has been marked by legislative efforts to address insecurity and foster national unity, including the passage of the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons Act and the Terrorism Prevention and Prohibition Act, as noted in his July 2025 address at the 6th World Conference of Speakers of Parliaments in Geneva.
His call for global parliamentary collaboration to promote peace and justice resonated widely, earning praise from GPMI for inspiring a new generation of leaders. The award underscores Nigeria’s renewed diplomatic influence, with Uyi noting Akpabio’s “tireless pursuit of international understanding” as a key factor.
