Social crusader and human rights activist, Aisha Yesufu, has expressed confidence that the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 general election, Mr. Peter Obi, stands a stronger chance of winning the presidency in 2027 than he did in the last election.

Yesufu, who was one of the prominent supporters of the “Obidient” movement during the 2023 polls, made the statement while speaking on the evolving political landscape ahead of the next general elections.

According to her, Obi’s growing acceptance among Nigerians, coupled with what she described as the “increasing disillusionment” with the current administration, could significantly boost his chances in 2027.

She noted that the Labour Party candidate had succeeded in changing the narrative of Nigerian politics by mobilizing young people, first-time voters, and professionals who were previously indifferent to electoral participation.

Peter Obi has better chances in 2027 than he had in 2023. The movement around him has become more organized and politically aware. Nigerians have also seen the difference between promises and performance,” Yesufu said.

The activist added that the lessons learned from the 2023 election would help the Labour Party and its supporters to better strategize for the next contest.

Yesufu, however, cautioned that Obi’s chances would depend largely on his ability to build a broad-based coalition, strengthen the Labour Party’s internal structure, and maintain the enthusiasm of his supporters across the country.

It’s not just about popularity anymore,” she said. “It’s about building systems, defending votes, and ensuring that citizens are not demoralized by what happened in 2023.”

Peter Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, finished third in the 2023 presidential election behind President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Since the election, he has continued to enjoy significant support, particularly among youths and urban voters, who view him as a symbol of accountability and good governance.
