The Chairman of Agege Local Government, Mr Abdul-Ganiyu Obasa, has pledged the council’s support for the 13MW Ogba Independent Power Plant (IPP).
Obasa made the pledge on Thursday at the groundbreaking ceremony of the plant being developed by Sahara Power Group in partnership with Ikeja Electric Plc at the Ogba Undertaking of Ikeja Electric.
He said the project would strengthen electricity supply in the area through a dedicated local network, while reducing dependence on the national grid and diesel generators.
Obasa commended the Chairman of Sahara Power Group, Mr Kola Adesina, for investing in infrastructure to support businesses, industries and residents in Agege and its environs.
“Reliable electricity is fundamental to grassroots development, job creation and quality of life.
“On behalf of the people of Agege, I commend this landmark initiative”.
The chairman assured the project promoters of the council’s full cooperation to ensure that residents benefited from the project.
“Agege Local Government pledges its full support and collaboration to ensure the benefits of the Ogba IPP reach our communities” .
Adesina said the project was more than a 13MW power plant, describing it as a commitment to powering Lagos with reliable and sustainable electricity.
He said Sahara Power had pursued partnerships to address the country’s power challenges, adding that the plant would reduce reliance on generators and improve the competitiveness of local businesses.
The Managing Director of Sahara Power, Mr Anthony Youdeowei, and the Chief Executive Officer of Ikeja Electric, Mr Ogochukwu Onyelucheya, also attended the ceremony.
Onyelucheya described the partnership as critical to improving electricity service delivery.
He said reliable power generation must be complemented by effective distribution to improve customer experience.
The Project Manager, Mrs Bunmi Fafiyebi, said the facility was designed for efficiency and reliability, assuring stakeholders of timely delivery.
She added that Cummins had pledged to provide high performance equipment to ensure dependable power generation.
The ceremony was also attended by officials of the Lagos State Ministry of Energy.
