The 2025 Annual Meetings of the African Development Bank Group (AfDB) commenced Today in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, under the theme “Making Africa’s Capital Work Better for Africa’s Development.” The opening ceremony marked a significant moment as it signaled the final meetings under the leadership of President Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, who is set to conclude his second term in August.
In his opening remarks, Dr. Adesina reflected on his decade-long tenure, describing it as a period of “relentless purpose, enduring passion, and tireless service.” He emphasized that his role was more than a job, stating, “This is not a job. If anyone is looking for a job, please don’t take it. This is not a job. This is a mission.” He expressed profound gratitude for the opportunity to serve, noting, “Serving as President of the African Development Bank Group has been the greatest honor of my life”.
A significant highlight of the meetings is the impending election of a new AfDB President. Five candidates from South Africa, Senegal, Zambia, Chad, and Mauritania are vying for the position. The selection comes at a critical time, as the Bank faces challenges such as proposed U.S. funding cuts amounting to $555 million. The incoming president will need to navigate these financial pressures, possibly by engaging with other international partners or increasing contributions from African member states.
The 2025 Annual Meetings are set to continue until May 30, featuring various sessions and discussions aimed at shaping the future trajectory of Africa’s development.
