Concerns over unpaid bonuses that briefly unsettled the Super Eagles’ camp at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations have been traced to administrative delays rather than a lack of funds, according to the National Sports Commission.
Chairman of the Commission, Shehu Dikko, addressed the issue on Thursday amid reports that members of the Nigerian team had considered boycotting their AFCON quarter-final match against Algeria in protest over outstanding entitlements.
The reports sparked anxiety among fans and stakeholders, raising questions about player welfare at the tournament. Dikko explained that the bonuses had already received the necessary approvals and that funds were released accordingly, but said bureaucratic procedures had slowed down the final disbursement.
He described the delay as a routine administrative challenge, insisting that there was no intention to shortchange the players. The NSC chairman assured that the commission was working closely with relevant agencies to resolve the bottlenecks and ensure that the players receive their bonuses without further delay.
He stressed that the welfare of national team players remains a priority for the commission. Dikko also appealed for calm within the team, expressing confidence that the matter would be settled promptly and would not distract the Super Eagles from their quest for success at the tournament.
The clarification comes as Nigeria continues its AFCON campaign, with officials keen to prevent off-field issues from overshadowing the team’s on-pitch performance.
