HOW CHRISTIANS PREPARE FOR ADVENT
As Christians approach the coming of Jesus Christ at Christmas, Catholics usher in this approaching period with various preparation as laid out in the Liturgical calendar.
This period of waiting for Christ coming at Christmas is called Advent.
Therefore, Advent is the period when Catholics prepare in anticipation for that coming.
Some of the these spiritual preparation to usher in Advent are :
1. 9 days novena to Christ the King beginning from 15/11/2024 to 23/11/2024
2. Feast of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary on November 21, 2024
3. Feast of Christ the King on November 24, 2024
WHAT IS ADVENT
Advent is the pre – Christmas season of the Catholic Church’s Liturgical year which begins on the feast of Christ the King, the Sunday nearest to the feast of St. Andrew on November 30.
“Advent” comes from the word “Adventus” which means “coming.”
During the season of Advent the Catholic community wait in anticipation with a sense of joyfulness the coming of Jesus Christ, the word of God to earth.
WHY CELEBRATE ADVENT
Catholics celebrate Advent in order to :
• Become more aware of Jesus’ continues presence in the church.
• To remember joyfully that the word of God became human in order to offer hope to humanity.
• To know and remember that God offer salvation from sinfulness to all of humanity.
HOW DOES THE CHURCH OBSERVE THE ADVENT SEASON ?
During the Advent season the scriptural readings :
✓ Focus on Jesus’ coming at the end of time to judge all men and women.
✓ Focus on the special joy and hope of the Christmas event.
✓ The choice of dedicated colours which symbolically represent the liturgical colours of Purple, Rose, and White – signifying Christian Chang of heart and lifestyle, and the promise of Christian hope in Jesus.
✓ Interestingly, and joyfully too, Advent is a special time for all believers to open their hearts more fully to the love of God and to the external salvation offered t all by the Saviour of the World whose birth is celebrated on Christmas day.
