The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has called for the immediate suspension of Nigeria’s newly enacted tax laws, alleging that critical provisions were altered after the bills had been passed by the National Assembly and assented to by President Bola Tinubu.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the opposition party said the alleged post-assent changes have triggered what it described as a grave constitutional crisis, warning that such actions amount to an executive takeover of the legislative process.
According to the ADC, any modification of a bill after it has been duly passed by the National Assembly and signed into law violates constitutional procedures and undermines the doctrine of separation of powers. The party argued that the integrity of lawmaking must be protected to preserve Nigeria’s democratic system.
The ADC cautioned that allowing the alleged alterations to stand would set a dangerous precedent, weakening the authority of the legislature and eroding public confidence in governance and the rule of law.
The party therefore urged the Federal Government to suspend the implementation of the tax laws pending a thorough review and clarification of the discrepancies. It also called on the National Assembly to urgently investigate the matter and take steps to safeguard its constitutional mandate.
The new tax laws are scheduled to come into effect on January 1, 2026.
However, the ADC insisted that implementation should not proceed until all constitutional concerns surrounding the legislative process are fully resolved.
