The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has called on the Nigeria Police Force to conduct a thorough investigation into the alleged assault of women during a festival in Ozoro, Isoko North Local Government Area of Delta State, urging authorities to treat the case as a precedent that would send a strong message against such acts.
The party said all those found culpable should be apprehended and prosecuted in accordance with the law. The demand was conveyed on Saturday by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, through his X account, where he stressed the need for justice and protection of women’s rights.
The ADC’s call, however, came a day after the Federal Government had already ordered a probe into the incident. On Friday, the Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, directed an investigation in a statement issued by the Ministry’s Head of Press and Public Relations, Ahmed Danbazau.
The party’s reaction followed a viral video that surfaced on Thursday showing alleged assaults on women during the Alue-Do Festival, also known as the “Festival of Fertility,” held in Ozoro Kingdom. The incident has since sparked widespread outrage and calls for accountability from various groups and individuals across the country.
According to the ADC, the matter should not be treated as an isolated incident but as a serious violation that requires decisive action from law enforcement agencies. The party emphasised that a thorough investigation and prosecution of offenders would serve as a deterrent and help prevent future occurrences.
The party also criticised the Governor of Delta State, Sheriff Oborevwori, stating that he addressed the incident through intermediaries instead of speaking directly on the matter himself despite the gravity of the allegations. The ADC said the situation required direct engagement and clear condemnation from the state’s highest office to demonstrate leadership and concern for the victims.
The incident has continued to generate national conversation about public safety at festivals and the protection of women in public spaces. Many stakeholders have called for stronger security arrangements at cultural events and stricter enforcement of laws to protect attendees from harassment and assault.
