The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has condemned the recent attack on a church in Lagos, accusing the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of fostering an environment of violence and intimidation that mirrors the operations of terrorist groups.
In a strongly worded statement issued on Sunday, the ADC described the attack as “a direct assault on freedom of worship and democracy,” adding that the ruling party’s silence over rising cases of political and religious violence in the country was deeply troubling.
“The APC has continued to act like a terrorist organisation, using fear, suppression, and unchecked violence as tools to weaken the opposition and intimidate citizens,” the party said. “What happened in Lagos is unacceptable in a democratic society, and we hold the ruling party responsible for enabling such hostility.”
Eyewitnesses confirmed that armed men invaded the church during service, leaving worshippers in panic and several injured. Though security operatives were later deployed, residents say attacks of this nature are becoming more frequent.
The ADC called on security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice, warning that failure to act decisively would further erode public trust in the government’s commitment to protecting lives and property.
“We urge Nigerians not to succumb to fear,” the party said. “The time has come for citizens to stand firm against a government that has failed to guarantee security and is now allowing violence to spill into sacred places of worship.”
Civil society organisations have also condemned the incident, urging the federal government to address insecurity across the country and protect religious institutions from becoming targets of politically motivated attacks.
