The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has urged the Federal Government to treat popular Fuji musician, Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, popularly known as Kwam 1, as a citizen of Nigeria and not as a partisan figure tied to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a statement issued by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Dr. Bamidele Ajadi, the ADC expressed concerns over what it described as the “blatant politicization of public figures” and “preferential treatment” reportedly given to Kwam 1 in recent state functions and government engagements.
“We have observed, with growing concern, the way the Federal Government appears to be projecting Kwam 1 not just as a cultural icon, but as a musician of the ruling APC,” Ajadi stated. “While we respect his contributions to Nigeria’s music industry, it is unacceptable for any government to convert an entertainer into a political mascot, especially using public resources.”
The party referenced Kwam 1’s frequent appearance at official APC functions, including his performance at recent state banquets and political rallies, which they claim gives the impression that he is an official mouthpiece of the party rather than a neutral entertainer.
“Kwam 1 is a citizen of Nigeria, and his craft should be appreciated across party lines. Elevating him as a political symbol risks dividing his fan base and diminishing the neutrality expected of cultural ambassadors,” Ajadi warned.
The ADC also raised questions about the alleged state sponsorship of some of his appearances, calling for transparency in the use of public funds.
“This favoritism erodes the principle of equality before the law. Entertainers, like other professionals, should not be drawn into political patronage that skews national unity,” the statement added.
The party urged President Bola Tinubu and other government officials to “draw a clear line between governance and politics,” warning that blurring this line fuels public distrust and undermines the credibility of national institutions.
Meanwhile, efforts to get a response from Kwam 1’s management were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
The ADC reaffirmed its commitment to a Nigeria where all citizens, regardless of political affiliation or profession, are treated fairly and equitably.
“Culture must be protected from partisanship. Let Kwam 1 remain a musician for all Nigerians,” the statement concluded.
