The Accord Party has officially petitioned the European Union, urging the international community to closely monitor the political climate in Osun State ahead of the governorship election scheduled for Saturday, August 15, 2026.
In a formal letter dated Wednesday, August 12, 2026, and submitted at the EU Delegation Complex in Central Business District, Abuja, the party called on Ambassador Gautier Mignot, Head of the EU Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS, to deploy diplomatic influence and election observers to ensure a peaceful, free, and credible exercise.
In the letter signed by the Accord National Leadership and presented to diplomatic correspondents during a press briefing in Abuja, the party expressed deep concerns over escalating political tensions, potential voter intimidation, and security vulnerabilities across key local government areas in Osun State.
The party outlined several critical requests to the European Union and international election observers: The Urgent dispatch of EU diplomatic observers to critical hot spots across the three senatorial districts in Osun State ahead of Saturday’s voting.
Diplomatic engagement with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies to guarantee institutional neutrality and strict compliance with the Electoral Act.
The Protection of Voter Franchise by monitoring of security agencies to prevent unauthorized curfews, voter suppression, or intimidation on election day.
Speaking at the press conference held at the Accord Party National Secretariat in Abuja following the submission of the petition, National Chairman Barrister Maxwell Mgbudem emphasized that the upcoming election serves as a crucial barometer for Nigeria’s electoral integrity ahead of the 2027 general elections.
”The eyes of the nation and the global community are on Osun State this Saturday. We are calling on Ambassador Gautier Mignot and the European Union to use their moral authority and diplomatic leverage to safeguard the sanctity of the ballot box,” Mgbudem stated.
Addressing journalists in Osogbo, the Osun State Capital, Mallam Olawale Rasheed, speaking on behalf of the campaign council, reaffirmed the party’s readiness for the Saturday poll while urging voters to remain vigilant and orderly.
The EU Delegation in Abuja acknowledged receipt of the letter on Wednesday morning, reassuring political stakeholders of its continued commitment to supporting democratic consolidation and peaceful electoral processes across West Africa.
