Markmentors Basketball Club owner, Igboche Mark warns that Nigeria’s abridged league structure is stifling talent.
Mark added that the structure was also undermining the sport’s development, threatening the nation’s future competitiveness on the global stage ahead.
Mark, a respected stakeholder within the basketball community.
He expressed hope that the National Sports Commission would ensure a transparent and credible electoral process.
He described the forthcoming Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) elections as a critical turning point for Nigerian basketball.
According to Mark, the sport needs a “total overhaul,” emphasising that only visionary leadership could drive meaningful progress.
Mark criticised the fragmented domestic league, saying its shortened, inconsistent format prevents young players from fully developing or competing at elite levels.
“Without a full, competitive league structure and strong grassroots programmes, Nigeria’s basketball potential will continue to be underutilised,” he said.
He added that, if entrusted with leadership, his priorities would include grassroots development, a structured talent adaptation system, and transparent administration—key elements for rebuilding the sport’s foundation.
A well-organised league supported by a reliable grassroots pipeline, he noted, would strengthen domestic basketball and enhance Nigeria’s competitiveness in Africa and globally.
Mark’s remarks reflect growing pressure from stakeholders calling for comprehensive governance reforms, including improvements in league structure, grassroots development, and talent identification, which have become central issues ahead of the elections.
Beyond basketball, Mark commended progress in Nigeria’s broader sports sector, praising the successful hosting of the Continental African Association tournaments.
He also highlighted the 1st West Africa Para-Sport events in Abeokuta, noting that such initiatives provided athletes with valuable exposure and competitive experience.
“I want to thank the Commission for the initiatives so far. We are seeing progress, and I look forward to more events that will give our athletes the exposure and experience they need,” he said.
The federation’s next board elections are expected in January 2026.
The current board’s tenure, which began on Jan. 31, 2022, will officially end on Jan. 31, 2026.
