Teachers in Abia State, under the umbrella of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), have threatened to embark on an indefinite strike if the state government fails to address their outstanding welfare demands within seven days.
The threat was contained in a notice of ultimatum dated January 5, 2026, jointly signed by the Abia State Chairman of the union, Mr Kingsley Mmadu, and the State Secretary, Mrs Nnenna Okonkwo.
According to the notice, the ultimatum will expire at midnight on Monday, January 12, 2026, after which teachers across the state may withdraw their services if the government does not take decisive action.
The union explained that the ultimatum followed what it described as the Abia State Government’s continued inaction on several issues earlier raised in a communiqué issued on December 19, 2025.
Although details of the demands were not fully outlined in the notice, the NUT said they bordered on teachers’ welfare and conditions of service, stressing that the concerns had been repeatedly communicated to the appropriate authorities without any meaningful response.
The union warned that failure to resolve the issues within the stipulated period could disrupt academic activities in public primary and secondary schools across the state.
The NUT, however, urged the state government to act urgently in the interest of industrial harmony and the education sector, noting that teachers remained committed to their duties but could no longer ignore challenges affecting their welfare and productivity.
