Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, came alive on Friday in a blaze of colour, music and cultural splendour as Governor Dapo Abiodun and his deputy, Noimot Salako-Oyedele, led a carnival train procession to mark the grand finale of the state’s 50th anniversary celebration.
The major roads of the city were transformed into a moving spectacle as thousands of residents lined the streets to witness the procession, which featured several creatively designed floats representing the state’s four zones — Remo, Ijebu, Yewa and Egba (RIYE). Each float vividly showcased the distinct cultures, histories and traditional occupations of the zones, highlighting the rich diversity that defines Ogun State.
One of the major attractions of the carnival was a giant “eja nla” fish float, measuring about the length of a 22-tyre truck. The oversized display symbolised the aquaculture heritage of the state’s riverine communities and drew admiration from spectators along the route.
The carnival train comprised an estimated 3,000 Ogun indigenes, alongside colourfully dressed dancers, drummers, masqueraders, folklore skaters, bikers and other performers. Their energetic displays created a festive atmosphere filled with excitement, glamour and rhythmic sounds, leaving lasting impressions on onlookers.
The procession formed a key highlight of the week-long activities commemorating Ogun State’s golden jubilee, celebrating five decades of unity, cultural pride and development since its creation.
