The Ekiti State Police Command on Friday, October 30, 2026, confirmed that Omoyele Sowore, the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), sustained minor injuries following an incident at a local eatery in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital.

The confirmation follows widespread reports on social media on Friday alleging that the activist and politician had been abducted by armed men in the state.

Addressing the reports in an official statement on Friday, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for the Ekiti State Command, SP Abutu Sunday, debunked the kidnapping narrative. He stated that police operatives responded swiftly to a distress call after Sowore was involved in an altercation with several individuals at a restaurant located in the Dalimore area of Ado-Ekiti.

”The Command wishes to categorically clarify that Mr. Sowore was not kidnapped,” said SP Abutu Sunday. “Preliminary information indicates that he had an altercation with some individuals at a restaurant around the Dalimore area in Ado-Ekiti, following which the Police were immediately alerted. Upon receiving the report, Police operatives swiftly mobilised to the scene and successfully rescued him.”

According to the police spokesperson, Sowore sustained minor injuries during the clash and was immediately evacuated to the Police Hospital in Ado-Ekiti, where he is currently receiving medical treatment.

The Ekiti State Commissioner of Police, CP Falade Adegoroye Michael, has ordered a discreet investigation into the event to unravel the circumstances surrounding the clash, identify the key perpetrators, and ensure those responsible are prosecuted.

Meanwhile, Sowore and his supporters have publicly disputed the official police account. Speaking via social media posts following the incident, Sowore rejected the police’s framing of the event as a “mere altercation,” asserting instead that he and his team were targeted in a pre-planned attack by armed individuals after returning from a radio interview in the state.

The police command urged members of the public to remain calm, disregard rumors of an alleged abduction, and refrain from spreading unverified information capable of inciting public unrest as investigations remain ongoing.
