Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara has confirmed the killing of nine operatives from the state-owned Community Protection Guards (CPG) following an ambush by bandits in the Tsafe Local Government Area.
In a statement released by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Sulaiman Idris, in Gusau on Tuesday (today, October 8), the Governor reported that the security personnel were attacked while manning a checkpoint on the outskirts of Tsafe town.
Governor Lawal condemned the ambush as a “barbaric act” carried out by fleeing bandits, praising the bravery of the CPG and other troops for their dedication to protecting lives and property.
“I received the unfortunate news of an ambush in Tsafe LGA, where nine of our courageous CPG members lost their lives,” the Governor lamented, describing the attack as a cowardly act carried out by “the bandits (who) were scattered and fleeing due to ongoing military pressure in the state.”
The Governor reassured residents that the troops would persist in their renewed efforts to combat banditry in Zamfara and the surrounding region.
Expressing his condolences to the families and loved ones of the fallen guards, Lawal assured their sacrifice would not be forgotten.
“I hope for a swift recovery for those injured. My government is committed to providing necessary support to the families of our frontline guards who lost their lives,” he added.
