The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade I, has declared that he is the paramount traditional ruler in Yorubaland, citing the expansive historical reach and central contributions of the old Oyo Empire to Yoruba civilisation.
The monarch made the assertion during an interview broadcast on Friday, November 6, 2026, on broadcast journalist Edmund Obilo’s media channel.
When asked directly whether the Alaafin holds the position of supreme traditional authority in Yorubaland, Oba Owoade answered in the affirmative. “Historically, yes. If you want to go by history and the contribution of Oyo to Yoruba civilisation, then I would say that the Alaafin is number one,” Oba Owoade stated.
During the session, the monarch emphasized that his declaration stems from documented history, military influence, administrative governance, and cultural expansion rather than personal rivalry. He noted that the old Oyo Empire laid the institutional foundation for Yoruba political structure and security across the region.
Addressing ongoing debates regarding traditional hierarchy, particularly concerning the Ooni of Ife, Oba Owoade clarified that he is not engaging in a public supremacy tussle, but maintaining the historical prestige of the Oyo throne.
The interview comes ahead of the inaugural Oyo Empire Day celebration, scheduled to take place from December 17 to 19, 2026, in Oyo Town. Initiated under the leadership of Oba Owoade I, the three-day cultural event aims to reconnect descendants of the Oyo Empire worldwide, preserve historical artifacts, and promote Yoruba cultural heritage.
Media representatives and cultural commentators note that the monarch’s remarks reinforce his ongoing effort to highlight the historical authority of the Oyo throne since his coronation.
