The Kwankwasiyya Movement has issued an urgent demand to the Federal Government and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to protect opposition political parties, guarantee a fair political environment, and safeguard Nigeria’s democracy ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The call was contained in an official press statement released on Thursday, November 5, 2026, at 10:00 AM WAT following a high-level consultative meeting of the movement’s leadership at the Kwankwasiyya National Secretariat in Kano.
Speaking on behalf of the organization, the National Spokesperson of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, Dr. Habibu Sale Mohammed, expressed deep concern over mounting political tensions, protracted legal disputes, and administrative actions that threaten political pluralism and democratic fairness in the country.
Addressing the media, Dr. Mohammed asserted that the Federal Government must demonstrate a clear, unequivocal commitment to political pluralism by ensuring that state institutions do not tolerate, encourage, or benefit from actions designed to weaken or suppress opposition voices prior to the 2027 polls.
He emphasized that a healthy democracy relies heavily on a level playing field where all political entities can participate without systemic intimidation. Focusing on the electoral umpire, the spokesperson urged INEC to maintain strict institutional neutrality and independence.
The movement stressed that the commission must strictly abide by valid court orders and established legal guidelines without granting preferential treatment to any political faction or political party. Furthermore, Dr. Mohammed addressed the lingering political litigations and legal disputes currently affecting party structures and alliances.
He called on the judiciary and appellate courts to handle all pending political cases with complete impartiality, transparency, and fairness, allowing every contending party a fair hearing without political interference.
The movement warned that unchecked institutional interference and biased administrative actions could undermine public confidence in the electoral process, potentially suppressing voter turnout and triggering political instability as campaign preparations for 2027 gather momentum.
Concluding the briefing, the Kwankwasiyya Movement called on its supporters across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory to remain peaceful, law-abiding, and vigilant while continuing to pursue all legitimate and constitutional avenues to protect their democratic rights.
