Abba Atiku Abubakar, son of former Vice President and prominent opposition leader Atiku Abubakar, has publicly defended his decision to endorse President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid, describing the move as a personal conviction made in good conscience despite his family’s political legacy.

Speaking during an official reception hosted at the Senate President’s guest house in Abuja, Abba acknowledged that his endorsement would inevitably attract public scrutiny due to his lineage. He emphasized, however, that individual political alignment in a constitutional democracy must ultimately remain a personal choice guided by national interest rather than bloodlines.

To cement his commitment to the ruling party, Abba pledged a donation of 10 campaign buses to the presidential campaign council and announced plans to spearhead a nationwide two-million-man rally aimed at mobilizing youth support for the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate ahead of the general elections.

The development has sparked varied reactions across Nigeria’s political landscape. Receiving Abba into the fold, Deputy Senate President Barau I. Jibrin and APC North-East Zonal Vice Chairman Mustapha Salihu praised the move, describing it as a strong validation of President Tinubu’s administrative performance and welcoming the added momentum to the party’s grassroots campaign.

Meanwhile, speaking on behalf of the former Vice President’s media office, Phrank Shaibu reiterated that the elder statesman deeply respects democratic principles and does not dictate the independent political associations of his adult children.

From the opposition camp, Theo Abu Agada, Director of New Media and Strategic Communications for the African Democratic Congress (ADC), acknowledged the constitutionality of individual political rights while noting that opposition strategists view the timing of the announcement as a calculated political optic ahead of the upcoming electoral cycle.
