The First Lady of Lagos State, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, has defended the reinstatement of the monthly environmental sanitation exercise, describing it as a vital initiative to sustain public health awareness and foster a lasting culture of hygiene across the state.

Speaking during the official flag-off and monitoring of the initiative at Obalende in the Ikoyi-Obalende Local Council Development Area (LCDA) on Saturday, April 25, 2026, between 7:00 AM and 10:00 AM, Dr. Sanwo-Olu emphasized that achieving a clean environment requires consistent civic engagement.

She noted that public participation is growing steadily and urged residents to extend their efforts beyond a single monthly event by adopting daily cleaning habits to keep the state flood-free and safe.

A delegation of high-ranking government officials joined the First Lady at the venue to reinforce compliance and demonstrate official support for the initiative.

Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, stressed the imperative of collective responsibility while issuing a stern warning against indiscriminate waste disposal.

Supporting the exercise alongside him, Lagos State Head of Service Olabode Agoro commended the strong turn-out of community members as he monitored key sites.

The monitoring exercise also featured active participation from Oluremi Hamzat, wife of the Deputy Governor of Lagos State; Engr. Olakunle Rotimi-Akodu, Special Adviser to the Governor on Environment; and Hon. Bola Oladunjoye, Chairman of Ikoyi-Obalende LCDA.

Together, the administration reiterated that re-establishing the monthly routine remains crucial to clearing blocked drainage channels, preventing urban flooding, and protecting public health across all local council areas.
