Exactly one year after severe flooding devastated agrarian communities and displaced hundreds of families across Jigawa State, the Federal Government, in collaboration with the Jigawa State Government, returned to the affected population on Saturday, October 31, 2026, to distribute comprehensive relief and empowerment materials.

The distribution exercise commenced at 10:00 AM at the Warwade Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) Camp in Dutse, targetting 610 verified victims of the disaster.

The joint relief effort was organized under the oversight of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Jigawa State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA).

To ensure transparency, accountability, and proper order, the exercise was monitored by an inter-agency supervisory team comprising representatives from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC), the Nigerian Red Cross Society, the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Police Force, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

Rather than limiting intervention to immediate food aid, the government provided a balanced mix of basic emergency supplies and long-term economic support tools.

The intervention included substantial food allocations, such as 500 bags of 25kg rice along with multiple cartons of spaghetti and cooking oil. For immediate shelter and living needs, victims received fresh mattresses, warm blankets, and essential domestic items.

Furthermore, to facilitate full economic recovery for affected households, the distribution featured vital agricultural and commercial equipment, including high-capacity water pumping machines for irrigation farming, commercial grain grinding machines, sewing machines, and cargo tricycles.

Speaking at the Warwade camp during the event, Audu Garba, a victim displaced from Auyo Local Government Area, expressed deep relief as the 2026 rainy season concluded, noting that the food items and bedding would directly ease the daily struggles his family has faced since losing their home last year.

Another displaced resident, Fatima Sule from Hadejia Local Government Area, shared that while she was missed during the initial emergency response last year, receiving a sewing machine at this phase provides her with the means to restart her tailoring business and achieve self-reliance.

Similarly, Ibrahim Musa, a displaced farmer from Dutse Local Government Area, stated that the irrigation pumping machine will allow him to resume dry-season farming immediately, expressing gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Umar Namadi for sustaining long-term recovery assistance.

Officials from the joint monitoring committee noted that this exercise marks the second major phase of structured resettlement and economic rehabilitation, fulfilling the government’s mandate to ensure that displaced families transition successfully from emergency relief to sustainable livelihoods.
