The Federal Government, operating through the South East Development Commission (SEDC), has officially launched a landmark $100 million gas distribution pipeline project designed to catalyse industrialisation, draw major investments, and generate thousands of jobs across the South East region.
The ceremonial kick-off and execution of the landmark agreement took place during the South-East Gas Infrastructure Investment and Project Development Ceremony, convened at the Hotel Presidential in Enugu. Under the expansive blueprint, the project will construct a 400-kilometre distribution network connecting the Assa North, Ohaji South (ANOH) gas processing facilities in Imo State directly to key manufacturing hubs, industrial parks, and commercial zones across Enugu, Anambra, Imo, Abia, and Ebonyi states.
Project developers have already identified more than 150 potential industrial and commercial end-users, projecting an initial off-take demand of 254 million standard cubic feet of natural gas per day. The initiative is being spearheaded through the South East Investment Company in partnership with infrastructure developer GasSync, backed by an immediate initial allocation of $3 million to fund preliminary engineering designs and corridor clearance work.
Delivering the key address on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, stressed the transformative potential of the venture for the region’s economy. ”Let the gas beneath our soil power our industries,” Kalu stated. “Let that energy become production; let production become employment; and let employment become prosperity for our people.
This project is a strategic investment that will connect the region’s natural gas resources to industries, strengthen manufacturing, and unlock economic opportunities across the five states. This is not five separate economies; they are parts of one interconnected economic region.” Reiterating the agency’s commitment to execution, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the SEDC, Mr. Mark Okoye, noted that the pipeline marks a fundamental shift in how regional growth is driven.
”This initiative signals a decisive transition from merely pinpointing regional development targets to actively structuring projects, deploying capital, and building strategic execution partnerships,” Okoye said. “By addressing long-standing energy infrastructure bottlenecks, we are restoring competitiveness to manufacturing clusters in Aba, Nnewi, Onitsha, Enugu, and beyond.”
Host Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State described the pipeline as a vital turning point, emphasizing that reliable, cost-effective energy remains the primary prerequisite for unlocking the South East’s manufacturing capacity.
Expressing similar solidarity, Anambra State Deputy Governor Dr. Onyekachukwu Ibezim, representing Governor Chukwuma Soludo, alongside Ebonyi State Deputy Governor Mrs. Patricia Obila, representing Governor Francis Nwifuru, jointly noted that piping natural gas directly to factories will dramatically lower operational overheads and revitalise struggling local enterprises currently burdened by high energy costs.
With the initial agreements finalized, project leaders are moving into immediate field operations, prioritising the completion of blended financing models, regulatory approvals, right-of-way acquisitions, and community engagement initiatives along the construction corridor.
