Microsoft Corp. announced on Monday, October 26, 2026, that it is offering voluntary buyout packages to approximately 60,000 employees, representing roughly 27% of its global workforce.

The sweeping initiative marks one of the tech industry’s largest voluntary separation programs to date, as the technology giant attempts to curb labor expenses while directing billions of dollars into artificial intelligence infrastructure and chip procurement.

The offer covers eligible personnel up to Level 70 across participating business divisions, spanning key markets including the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and India. Operational units vital to core growth, such as data center operations, frontline sales, and customer-facing marketing personnel, have been excluded from the program to preserve essential infrastructure capacity.

In an internal memorandum circulated to global staff on Monday morning, Amy Coleman, Chief People Officer at Microsoft, outlined the purpose of the voluntary exit program.

”This offer gives eligible employees who may be considering a future outside the company a new choice to make that transition now with support,” Coleman wrote. “It also gives participating organizations another way to adapt their workforce to changing needs.”

Addressing investment strategies during a prior briefing with financial analysts at Microsoft headquarters, Chief Financial Officer Amy Hood noted that nearly two-thirds of the company’s capital spending is currently allocated toward short-lived assets, primarily high-performance AI chips, to keep pace with soaring enterprise demand for both AI services and cloud computing infrastructure.

Microsoft’s capital expenditure is projected to hit an unprecedented $175 billion for calendar year 2026.

A company spokesperson added in a statement on Monday afternoon that Microsoft retains full discretion to review individual exit applications, ensuring the business retains critical engineering talent and maintains continuity in high-growth product groups.

As of June 30, 2026, Microsoft reported a total headcount of approximately 223,000 full-time employees. The new buyout initiative represents the latest phase in an ongoing structural realignment, following a voluntary separation scheme covering 9,000 U.S. employees earlier in the year and a July workforce reduction of 4,800 roles, primarily within its Xbox gaming division.

With Microsoft scheduled to report its first-quarter financial results after market close on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, Wall Street investors are watching closely to see how the aggressive reallocation of capital toward generative AI hardware affects short-term operating margins.

Following Monday’s announcement, Microsoft shares closed up approximately 1% in trading on the New York Stock Exchange.
