The Plateau State Police Command, alongside the Department of State Services (DSS), the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and other sister security agencies, convened a major stakeholders’ meeting with leaders of political parties and their candidates on Friday, October 23, 2026, offering a firm guarantee that security forces will maintain absolute neutrality and disappoint those predicting violence ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The high-level security engagement, held at the Police Officers’ Mess in Jos, brought together political party chieftains under the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), electoral officials, civil society groups, and heads of security organizations to map out strategies for a peaceful electoral process.

Addressing the gathering, the Commissioner of Police, CP Ayodeji Faniyan, declared that the police and partner agencies are fully committed to guaranteeing a safe and unbiased environment for all political actors.

Emphasizing that elections should never divide citizens or ignite conflict, CP Faniyan admonished politicians to view the upcoming polls as a democratic contest rather than a war.

He noted that every political party has ample opportunity to canvass for votes, adding that security forces are under strict directives from the Inspector General of Police to uphold institutional neutrality and deliver an even higher standard of operational professionalism than in previous off-cycle elections.

Reinforcing the call for peaceful conduct, the State Director of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Mrs. Kaneng Tabitha Pam-Hworo, urged political leaders to rein in their supporters, refrain from vote-buying, and reject character assassination, misinformation, and fake news.

She warned party executives that violence or friction at any polling unit would lead directly to the cancellation of results by electoral authorities, wasting the legitimate efforts of voters.

Reminding candidates that only one seat is available for the governorship, she appealed to politicians to maintain their personal integrity, protect the state’s hard-won peace, and accept the democratic outcome in good faith.

Adding to the assurances, representatives speaking on behalf of the State Resident Electoral Commissioner confirmed that state-level preparations by INEC are nearly complete.

Electoral officials reaffirmed their readiness to conduct a transparent, free, and credible election, highlighting ongoing national initiatives to ensure that Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) are fully disenfranchised-proofed and enabled to cast their ballots.

Speaking on behalf of the command’s media and public engagements, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) SP Alfred Alabo reaffirmed that the command will continue to maintain open communication channels across all 17 local government areas of Plateau State to promptly address security concerns throughout the campaign period and beyond.
