President Bola Tinubu has expressed sadness over the death of Pa Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti, a prominent Yoruba leader and elder statesman, describing him as a man whose life was defined by integrity, sacrifice and service to humanity.

Fasoranti, a former leader of the pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, died at the age of 100.

In a condolence message issued on Tuesday, Tinubu extended his sympathies to the deceased’s family, the people of Akure, the Ondo State Government, the South-West region and members of Afenifere.

The President described Fasoranti as one of the leading figures in the progressive political tradition associated with the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, saying his life reflected discipline, honesty and an enduring commitment to Nigeria’s development.

Tinubu recalled that Fasoranti began his career as an educationist and school principal before serving as Commissioner for Finance in the old Western Region. He later emerged as a prominent figure in Afenifere, championing the interests of the Yoruba people and advocating a more equitable Nigeria.

According to the President, the late statesman remained steadfast in his advocacy for true federalism, social justice, national unity and equal opportunities for Nigerians.

He also praised Fasoranti’s contributions to the country’s democratic struggle, noting that he remained committed to democratic ideals and was willing to make personal sacrifices for their realisation.

Tinubu said Nigeria would miss the elder statesman’s wisdom, moral authority and guidance, particularly at a time when the country needed the experience and counsel of respected national figures.

The President recalled celebrating Fasoranti’s 100th birthday on May 11, 2026, describing the milestone as a testament to a life marked by honour, sacrifice and significant contributions to society.

He also reflected on his visit to Fasoranti’s residence in Akure in 2022, when he informed the Yoruba leader of his intention to seek the presidency.

Tinubu said Fasoranti prayed for him during the visit and expressed the belief that he would become President while the elder statesman was still alive. He noted that the prayer was eventually fulfilled.

The President, however, expressed regret that Fasoranti might not live long enough to witness the full benefits of his administration’s economic policies during a second term.

Despite the loss, Tinubu urged the deceased’s family and associates to take comfort in his long life and enduring contributions to Nigeria’s political and social development.

He prayed for the repose of Fasoranti’s soul and asked God to give his family, associates and all those mourning him the strength to bear the loss.

Tinubu added that the late Afenifere leader’s commitment to principled leadership, democracy and service to humanity would remain an inspiration to future generations.
