A catastrophic gas pipeline explosion rocked the Aleto community in Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State on Thursday evening, October 15, 2026, leaving at least 20 people injured, destroying over 50 houses, and incinerating several vehicles.

The explosion, which occurred at a facility belonging to the Nigerian Gas Infrastructure Company (NGIC), sent high-velocity shockwaves and thick plumes of fire through the residential district. Panic ensued as residents fled their homes to escape the advancing inferno.

According to community leaders and eyewitnesses, the pipeline had been leaking gas for nearly three weeks prior to the blast. Local representatives reported that warning letters and formal petitions had been dispatched to relevant agencies asking for urgent intervention, but the hazard remained unaddressed.

Speaking at the scene of the incident, Comrade Chuma, a representative of the affected community, criticized the pipeline operators for failing to manage the pre-existing leak properly:

”There was a leakage on another section of the Nigeria Gas Company pipeline. We wrote to them and submitted a petition to NOSDRA and the Rivers State Ministry of Environment, copying the police for urgent intervention. We asked for a joint investigation visit, but we don’t know what they did before leaving. Today, we were called to an explosion on the same pipeline that destroyed over 50 houses and cars, with many casualties.”

Chuma added that community volunteers had to step in to restrict access to the blast radius to prevent further casualties as no representatives from the operating company had arrived at the scene.

Victims suffering from severe burn injuries and respiratory distress were evacuated by responders and rushed to nearby hospitals across Eleme LGA for emergency medical treatment.

Environmental and civil rights organizations have voiced concern over the industrial accident. Dr. Fyneface Dumnamene, Executive Director of the Youths and Environmental Advocacy Centre (YEAC-Nigeria), issued an urgent public statement calling on government authorities to intervene immediately:

”We are using this medium to call on the relevant authorities, the Rivers State Government, the Ministry of Environment, NOSDRA, and the Federal Government, to come to the aid of the Aleto people. This is a serious incident, and an immediate Joint Investigation Visit (JIV) must be conducted to establish the exact cause and hold responsible parties accountable.”
