The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Enugu State has called on the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) to tender an unreserved public apology over what it described as misleading accounts regarding recent security incidents at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport and the NDC’s state secretariat.

The demand follows a escalating dispute stemming from events on Saturday, October 10, 2026, when the NDC gathered to welcome its governorship candidate, Sir Chinyeaka Ohaa, at the airport, alongside subsequent reports of an attack and shooting at the NDC party secretariat.

In an official reaction released on Monday, October 12, 2026, the APC State Publicity Secretary, Chief Uche Obute, criticized the NDC’s narrative, accusing the opposition party of exaggerating claims to gain political sympathy and undermine state security.

The political row began on Sunday, October 11, 2026, when the Secretary to the Enugu State Government (SSG), Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, issued a statement detailing the government’s position on the airport disruption. The state government alleged that the NDC attempted to hold an unapproved “Grand Statewide Campaign Flag-off” at the facility.

The NDC swiftly countered these assertions during a morning press conference in Enugu on Monday, October 12. Speaking on behalf of the party, Emmanuel Chukwujekwu Nebo stated that the NDC had merely organized a peaceful reception for candidate Sir Chinyeaka Ohaa, not a campaign rally.

Nebo presented official documentation showing that written notifications had been submitted and stamped on October 8 by the Enugu State Police Command, alongside proof of payment made to the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).

Nebo alleged that despite these preparations, peaceful supporters were tear-gassed, shot at, and attacked at the airport, naming Moses Arisi as one of several members who sustained severe injuries.

Addressing the reported violence at the NDC state secretariat, APC Publicity Secretary Chief Uche Obute faulted the NDC’s handling of its injury reports. Obute pointed out contradictions in the NDC’s statement, noting that the party claimed it was still verifying the medical status of those injured during the secretariat fracas, yet proceeded to declare and observe a minute of silence for them.

”The question is: since the NDC was still verifying the final medical status of person or persons injured in their party fracas, how come they declared and observed a minute’s silence to mourn the living?” Obute asked. “Persons and institutions that lay claim to integrity should be able to admit their mistakes, confess their transgressions, and apologise to the people.”

Obute further claimed that the clashes resulted from internal political disagreements within the NDC rather than external targeted attacks. He accused the opposition party and its candidate of stoking political tension and prioritizing electoral ambitions over the state’s peace and security.

The APC advised opposition parties in Enugu to focus on presenting clear manifestoes to voters rather than escalating political friction across the state. As of Tuesday, the NDC has not formally responded to the APC’s demand for an apology.
