Chief Ralph Obioha, a prominent elder statesman, former lawmaker, and central figure in Nigeria’s resistance against military rule during the 1990s, has died at the age of 80.

The family confirmed his passing in an official statement issued Tuesday in Enugu, noting that the elder statesman passed away peacefully on October 3, 2026.

”We respectfully request privacy at this time while we mourn and come to terms with this profound loss,” the statement read. “Details of the memorial and funeral will be announced in due course.”

Obioha rose to historic national and international prominence as a founding chieftain of the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO). Following the military junta’s annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election won by Chief M.K.O. Abiola, Obioha fled into political exile under intense state persecution.

Operating from Canada and the United States, he spearheaded NADECO’s external operations alongside exiled activists like Chief Anthony Enahoro and General Alani Akinrinade, successfully lobbying Western democracies to enforce diplomatic and economic pressure against the military dictatorship.

Beyond his pivotal involvement in the June 12 struggle, Obioha maintained a multi-decade legacy in public service. He served as a Second Republic member of the House of Representatives.

Obioha founded the Justice Party (JP), which fielded candidates during the 2003 general elections and headed the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Caretaker Committee, representing southeastern geopolitical interests.

He was recognised by President Bola Tinubu in June 2026 alongside key June 12 figures for his sacrifices in defending Nigerian democracy.

Funeral arrangements and memorial services are expected to be announced by the family in the coming days.
