Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) President Pedro Proença has issued a public defense of Cristiano Ronaldo, describing the national team captain as the country’s ultimate sporting icon following a recent conflict within the squad setup.
Speaking at federation headquarters on October 5, 2026, following Portugal’s 2-1 UEFA Nations League victory against Norway, Proença addressed the fallout between Ronaldo and newly appointed head coach Jorge Jesus. The dispute culminated in the veteran forward leaving the national camp early ahead of recent international fixtures.
”Cristiano Ronaldo is the greatest symbol of Portuguese identity, and we must pay him the respect he deserves,” Proença stated. “He is in the national team on the basis of his own sporting merit, and that is absolutely unquestionable. He will always be part of this group as long as he is technically capable of representing Portugal.”
The disagreement reportedly originated during the team’s stay in Copenhagen prior to their match against Denmark at Parken Stadium. Following public comments made by Jesus regarding tactical roles, Ronaldo made the decision to depart the camp.
Proença downplayed suggestions of a permanent rift, characterizing the incident as a temporary friction that can be handled internally now that the current match block has concluded.
”Now that the four matches are over, we have the time and calm to sit down together and resolve the misunderstanding,” Proença said. “Cristiano is part of our legacy, and he will always be here whenever the coach wants him.”
The FPF leadership confirmed plans to hold mediated discussions between Ronaldo and Jesus ahead of the next round of international fixtures.
