The Plateau Commissioner for Works, Dr Cletus Shurkuk, has urged Nigerians to remain patient with the country’s development process, describing Nigeria and Plateau State as works in progress.
Shurkuk made the appeal while felicitating with Nigerians on the country’s Independence anniversary and acknowledging the challenges affecting governance and economic progress.
The commissioner, who spoke in Jos, said insecurity, particularly in Plateau and other parts of the country, had continued to hamper development and economic activities.
He called on citizens to support the government and contribute their quota to national development, stressing that governance was a gradual process and that rebuilding damaged structures and systems required more time than destroying them.
Shurkuk said addressing the country’s challenges required the involvement of all sectors of society rather than government alone.
He identified the government, private sector, development partners and other well-meaning Nigerians as important contributors to the growth and development of Plateau State and the country, urging them to work together towards achieving sustainable progress.
While assuring citizens of the government’s commitment to developing Plateau, the commissioner acknowledged the difficulties being experienced by Nigerians but maintained that progress was being made.
He likened the country’s situation to a woman in labour, saying the difficult period would eventually end and Nigerians would have reasons to be hopeful about the future.
Shurkuk therefore appealed to citizens to continue supporting the government, praying for the country and contributing positively within their various communities and places of work.
He said collective responsibility, patience and cooperation would be necessary for Nigeria to overcome its challenges and achieve the development expected by its citizens.
