The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has deployed more than 170 ambulances across Nigeria as part of efforts to strengthen emergency response and rescue operations following road traffic crashes.
The Corps Public Education Officer, Mr Osondu Ohaeri, disclosed this on Monday in Abuja while responding to questions on the operational capacity of the corps’ emergency ambulance network. He said the FRSC had more than 170 ambulances and 60 Zebra points nationwide, making it one of the largest ambulance networks among emergency response agencies in the country.
Ohaeri, however, clarified that the figure did not represent the number of ambulances currently operational or serviceable as of September 2026. He explained that an accurate figure would require an updated fleet-status report from the corps’ medical and rescue office, noting that the availability of individual ambulances depended on their location, condition and assignment.
He said the FRSC had historically recorded an average response time of about 15 minutes under its documented emergency-response programme, but cautioned against presenting the figure as the current nationwide average without updated operational data.
According to him, response times could vary based on the location of a crash, traffic congestion, distance from the nearest ambulance point, accessibility of the scene, accuracy of information provided by callers and whether emergency teams were attending to other incidents.
Ohaeri said faster response to road traffic crashes and other emergencies remained a management priority for the FRSC in 2026, with efforts ongoing to strengthen rescue deployment and collaboration with relevant agencies.
He added that the corps would continue to improve its emergency response mechanisms and urged that complaints concerning response, evacuation, treatment of victims or alleged misconduct be channelled through the appropriate authorities for investigation.
