Former two-term Senator representing Abia Central, Dr. Nkechi Nwaogu, has firmly rejected claims by the Abia State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) that she remains a member of the party, asserting that the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) is now her sole political platform for the 2027 senatorial election.

The political dispute escalated on Saturday, September 26, 2026, following a press statement issued by the Abia State APC Publicity Secretary, Uche Aguoru. Aguoru claimed that the APC’s attention had been drawn to reports from the NDC regarding Nwaogu, whom he referred to as “our own Mama APC” and maintained that she remains a “bonafide member” of the ruling party.

Responding swiftly on Saturday afternoon through her Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Victor Kelechi Onyendi, Nwaogu characterized the APC’s claims as “infantile” and factually untrue.

”We make one thing clear: Senator Nwaogu has left the APC, and she is not returning,” Onyendi stated. “She has chosen the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), where she is respected, accepted, and actively participating in the political process.”

Onyendi urged the APC leadership in Abia State to focus on resolving its internal post-primary divisions rather than attempting to drag Nwaogu back into its fold. He noted that several APC candidates in the state have publicly distanced themselves from the party’s governorship candidate and endorsed alternative flagbearers.

Nwaogu, who previously served in the House of Representatives and the Senate, formally resigned from the APC in May 2026 following disputes over the party’s senatorial primaries in Abia Central.

She subsequently joined the NDC before the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) deadline to secure the party’s nomination for the Abia Central Senatorial District in 2027.

Reiterating her commitment to her new party, Onyendi emphasized that Nwaogu remains focused on delivering representation for the people of Abia Central under the NDC umbrella, advising her former party to concentrate on its own affairs.
