Exactly twenty-five years after the first commercial Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) signals flickered across Nigeria, key architects, policymakers, and corporate giants of the nation’s telecommunications ecosystem converged on Thursday, September 24, 2026, at the Oriental Hotel in Victoria Island for a landmark double book launch and industry summit.

The event, convened under the auspices of the 12th eWorld Forum, marked the presentation of two major works by veteran technology journalist, publisher of eWorldnews, and media entrepreneur Aaron Ukodie.

The gathering brought together regulators, mobile network operators, infrastructure providers, and civil society leaders to reflect on a quarter-century of telecommunications progress and evaluate the trajectory of Africa’s largest digital economy.

Opening prompt in Function Rooms 2, 3, and 4 of the Oriental Hotel, the summit carried the overarching theme: “The GSM Digital Milestones: 25 Years On… Insights from the Past, Ideas for a Smarter Digital Future”.

The primary centerpiece of the ceremony was Aaron Ukodie’s sweeping history, Nigeria’s GSM Revolution at 25: Hall of Digital Pioneers and Players.

The volume chronicles the critical policy choices, financial gambles, and regulatory triumphs that transformed Nigeria from a telecommunications desert in 2001, when fewer than 400,000 landlines served a population of over 120 million, into a connected digital market with over 200 million active subscriptions.

Featuring profiles of more than 100 instrumental figures, the book highlights the visionaries across government, regulatory agencies, corporate boardrooms, and media houses whose work paved the way for modern fintech, e-commerce, and mobile broadband.

”Revolutions are never made by technology alone,” Ukodie noted during his presentation. “They are made by people, the policy pioneers who drafted the regulatory frameworks, the operators who built infrastructure across challenging terrain, and the communicators who helped the public navigate an entirely new way of life.”

Alongside the historical treatise, Ukodie presented his deeply personal memoir, The Pilgrim Trail: Journey of Faith, Purpose and Destiny. Subtitled “Heard of Prayers, People, Pain and Victory,” the book provides an insider’s account of the birth of ICT journalism in Nigeria, the realities of media entrepreneurship, and the author’s path to recovery following a stroke in 2023.

Reflecting on the relationship between both books, Ukodie described them as complementary halves of a single journey: one capturing an industry that transformed a nation, and the other detailing the life of a chronicler who grew alongside it.

Industry leaders took the podium to share insights on the sector’s evolution and outline future priorities.

Dr. Ernest Ndukwe, former Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and Chairman of MTN Nigeria, praised the publication for preserving the institutional memory of the 2001 spectrum auctions. Dr. Ndukwe emphasised that transparency and regulatory independence remain the bedrock of investor confidence in the digital economy.

Dr. Aminu Maida, Executive Vice Chairman and CEO of the NCC, noted in his address that as Nigeria transitions from voice connectivity to artificial intelligence, cloud infrastructure, and 5G expansion, learning from the execution strategies of the past 25 years remains crucial.

The Corporate and Advocacy Representatives from partnering organisations highlighted the shift toward expanding regional internet exchange capacity, scaling infrastructure tower sharing, and defending digital rights across West Africa.

The ceremony was supported by key institutions across Nigeria’s public and private sectors. Corporate sponsors and institutional partners included MTN Nigeria, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), IHS Towers, Digital Realty, the Internet Exchange Point of Nigeria (IXPN), eWorldnews, Paradigm Initiative, and Dr. Ernest Ndukwe.

Proceedings concluded with an interactive panel session on accelerating digital infrastructure investment, followed by the formal unbundling and signing of the two publications.
