China has expressed its readiness to strengthen media cooperation with Nigeria through professional exchanges, technological collaboration and joint content production.
Liu Linhai, Vice President of the Research and Training Institute (RTI) of the National Radio and Television Administration (NRTA), made this known at the closing ceremony of a 15-day seminar for about 28 Nigerian media professionals in Beijing. The programme focused on broadcasting convergence and communication capacity-building.
Linhai said the seminar provided an opportunity for Chinese and Nigerian media professionals to exchange experiences on journalism, broadcasting and the changing global media landscape. He said participants were introduced to China’s experiences in the sector and explored approaches to storytelling on issues including modernisation and poverty reduction.
He also highlighted the participants’ interest in emerging technologies, particularly Artificial Intelligence, and their potential application in journalism.
According to him, technology could help bridge the digital divide, improve media production and enable Nigerian media organisations to reach wider audiences, while future cooperation could include joint journalism projects, audiovisual material sharing and the co-production of documentaries and micro-dramas.
Responding, Dr Qasim Akinreti, representative of the Nigerian delegation, thanked the Chinese government and NRTA for hosting the programme.
He described the seminar as an enriching combination of academic learning, professional engagement and cultural exposure, adding that the knowledge gained from lectures, institutional visits and interactions with Chinese media practitioners would help improve professional practice and strengthen media cooperation between both countries.
