Former Anambra State Governor and 2027 presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has officially disowned a forged letter circulating on social media addressed to the Obi of Onitsha, His Majesty Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Ugochukwu Achebe.
The disclaimer, issued personally by Obi through a statement released on his verified X handle on Saturday morning, September 19, 2026, dismissed the viral document as a “total fabrication” created by “mischievous elements”.
The controversy emerged on Saturday, September 19, 2026, following the widespread distribution of a fake letter dated the same day and titled “The Future of Ndigbo is Bleak.”
The forged document made statements regarding political and financial governance in Anambra State, specifically targeting recent public exchanges between Obi’s past administration and the current state government led by Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo.
The fake correspondence called on the Onitsha monarch and Igbo elders to step into the financial row, urging the state to open its financial records and audit external debt figures. The document carried a forged signature and an emblem associated with the Obi/Kwankwaso 2027 political movement.
In his statement issued from Abuja, Obi categorically denied authoring or signing the letter: ”My attention has been drawn to a fake letter circulating on social media, purportedly written by me to His Majesty, Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Ugochukwu Achebe, the Obi of Onitsha, concerning political and financial matters in Anambra State,” Obi stated.
“This document is entirely false, malicious, and a fabrication by mischievous elements aimed at misleading the public. Furthermore, the signature appended to the letter is completely forged.” ”I urge the public and media to disregard this spurious publication.

On Wednesday, September 16, 2026, the Anambra State Government issued an official briefing claiming that eight external loan facilities contracted during Obi’s tenure (2006–2014) remained unliquidated upon his departure on March 17, 2014.
Citing updated figures from the Debt Management Office (DMO), state officials stated that these outstanding obligations had risen to ₦127.4 billion as of June 30, 2026.
In response, former Secretary to the Anambra State Government (SSG), Oseloka Obaze, speaking on behalf of Obi’s administrative legacy team, released documentation confirming that Obi handed over ₦86.6 billion in liquid assets and domestic investments upon leaving office, insisting that no contractual liabilities, pensions, or salary debts were left unpaid.
