The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has issued a stern warning to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) and its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, describing the choice of Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso as vice-presidential running mate ahead of the 2027 general elections as a “gross mistake”.
In an official press statement released in Abuja on Monday, September 7, 2026, the NNPP National Secretary-General, Comrade Oginni Olaposi, alleged that Kwankwaso’s history reveals a pattern of political betrayal that could ultimately destabilize the NDC.
Reflecting on Kwankwaso’s tenure as the NNPP’s 2023 presidential candidate, Olaposi noted that the party provided the former Kano State governor with an unhindered platform, only for him to turn against the party’s leadership post-election.
”This is why political parties must be careful of who they choose as running mates and flag bearers,” Olaposi stated. “Kwankwaso dragged a party that brought him to the limelight in the presidential contest, freely gave him a platform, and did all it could to support him, and now thinks he is free from the wrath of God? Once a betrayer, always a betrayer, and posterity will prove us right.”
The NNPP national secretary dismissed rumors that the party was ever surrendered to Kwankwaso by its founder, Dr. Boniface Aniebonam, clarifying that the NNPP remains under the custodian ownership of its Board of Trustees.
He warned the leadership of the NDC, specifically mentioning founder Seriake Dickson, to safeguard the party’s internal structure from potential takeover attempts.
Olaposi emphasised that presidential elections are not won solely on the popularity of the main candidate, noting that voters will scrutinize Kwankwaso’s track record.
He concluded by urging former NNPP members who left during Kwankwaso’s tenure to return to the party as preparations gear up for 2027.
As of press time, neither the NDC campaign organization nor Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso’s media team has issued an official response to the statement.
