Jigawa State Governor, Malam Umar Namadi, has approved the appointment of Dr. Lawan Ahmed Muhammad Sani as the 17th Emir of Gumel. The announcement was made on Sunday following the passing of his father, the late Emir, Alhaji Ahmed Muhammad Sani II, who led the traditional council for nearly four decades.
The appointment follows the unanimous recommendation of the Gumel Emirate Kingmakers, who submitted their report to the state government after a selection process held at the Emir’s Palace in Gumel.
Announcing the decision during a press briefing at the Government House in Dutse on Sunday morning, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Malam Bala Ibrahim, confirmed that Governor Namadi exercised his powers under the Jigawa State Traditional Rulers Law to ratify the kingmakers’ choice. Dr. Lawan Ahmed Muhammad Sani brings extensive experience in public administration and traditional governance, having served within the emirate council prior to his elevation.
Alhaji Ahmed Muhammad Sani II passed away on Thursday at a medical facility, leaving behind a legacy of peace and regional development during his 43-year reign. The state government indicated that official coronation details and public reception dates will be announced by the central planning committee in the coming days, following the completion of the traditional 3-day mourning period.
Governor Namadi urged the newly appointed Emir to build upon his late father’s legacy by fostering unity, security, and economic progress across the Gumel Emirate and Jigawa State as a whole.
