In a major push to strengthen regional security, Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has pitched Delta State as the most viable operational hub for the Nigerian Army’s newly established 83 Division.
During an executive stakeholder session held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, at the Government House in Asaba, Governor Oborevwori formally requested President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, to locate the division’s headquarters within the state.
Receiving the Army’s high-level consultative committee sent to assess logistics and infrastructure options, Oborevwori highlighted Delta’s central location in the Niger Delta as an indispensable operational advantage.
”Delta State is more central,” Governor Oborevwori emphasized. “Somebody coming from Edo will come through Delta, while somebody coming from Bayelsa to Edo will also pass through Delta. If the headquarters is located here, everybody can connect to the centre.”
To demonstrate Delta State’s readiness to host the strategic formation, the governor outlined key economic assets and infrastructural advantages:
Access to three operational airports (Asaba, Osubi, Escravos) and four functional deep-water seaports (Warri, Burutu, Sapele, Koko). Safeguarding high-value oil and gas infrastructure vital to Nigeria’s economic stability.
The State will grant support packages, Immediate provision of land, temporary facilities, and direct financial contributions to guarantee a seamless operational rollout.
To reinforce his track record, Oborevwori pointed to ongoing state-funded defense projects, including recent infrastructure builds for the 63 Brigade and housing units at the Amphibious Army Barracks in Agbor.
The military consultative delegation commended the state’s proactive stance and confirmed that Delta’s proposal would be prioritized in their final report to army leadership and the presidency.
