CP Samuel Etaifo Erale officially assumed duty as the 25th Commissioner of Police for Delta State on Monday, August 31, 2026, succeeding outgoing chief CP Yemi John Oyeniyi at the State Command Headquarters in Asaba.
The formal leadership hand-over was confirmed in an official statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Bright Edafe.
The announcement follows Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu’s recent redeployment drive, which brought CP Erale to Delta State following his high-profile assignment overseeing security during the Osun State governorship election.
CP Erale’s appointment has drawn swift reactions from civil rights bodies. Speaking from Warri, the Delta State Chairman of the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR), Comrade Derrick Oritsematosan Agberen, welcomed the deployment, commending the Police Service Commission for promoting federal character and South-South representation.
However, Agberen expressed concern regarding institutional stability, noting that Delta State has seen three Police Commissioners within seven months, and urged CP Erale to prioritize human rights and community partnerships.
Born on March 2, 1968, at Pedro Police Barracks in Shomolu, Lagos, CP Erale hails from Owan East Local Government Area of Edo State. He earned a B.Sc. (Hons) in Political Science from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, in 1992, before joining the Nigeria Police Force in 1994 as a Cadet ASP (Course 18).
A veteran of tactical policing, he spent 14 years in the Police Mobile Force, serving 9 years as Squadron Commander for MOPOL 33 in Ekiti and MOPOL 26 in Akwa Ibom.
His service record includes postings at the Special Investigation Unit of the FCID, DCP of Administration in Rivers State Command, and DCP in charge of Community Safety and Crime Prevention at Force Headquarters, Abuja.
In 2000, he served with the United Nations Peacekeeping Mission in Kosovo and completed specialized training in Small Arms and Explosives at the International Law Enforcement Academy in Gaborone, Botswana.
He is a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police and the National Institute of Police Studies. In his inaugural address to senior command officers in Asaba, CP Erale assured residents of a proactive, intelligence-driven framework focused on eliminating kidnapping, cultism, and violent crime while maintaining strict police discipline and civil rights accountability.
