The Lagos State Government has documented 33,009 cases of domestic and sexual violence between September 2021 and July 2026, with domestic violence accounting for the vast majority of reported incidents across the state.
​The figures were disclosed on Monday morning during a media briefing at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre in Alausa, Ikeja. Speaking on behalf of the state government, Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, Executive Secretary of the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA), detailed the comprehensive data gathered by the agency over the 59-month period.
​According to the official report released on Monday, August 31, the agency handled a total of 33,009 cases, with domestic violence representing approximately 75% of all logged complaints. The remaining cases comprised sexual assault, statutory rape, child abuse, and emotional spousal battery.
Details highlighted during the briefing showed Spousal abuse and domestic violence topped the registry, followed by sexual violence cases involving both adults and minors. Alimosho, Kosofe, Ikeja, and Ikorodu Local Government Areas recorded the highest concentration of reported incidents.
The DSVA attributed the high volume of cases to increased public awareness, active community reporting, and expanded access to the state’s toll-free helplines.
Over the same period, the state secured hundreds of convictions through the Special Offences Court, alongside ongoing prosecutions managed by the Ministry of Justice.
​Addressing journalists, Vivour-Adeniyi emphasized that the rising numbers reflect greater public trust in the state’s reporting channels rather than purely an increase in crime.
​”The numbers we see today are a testament to the fact that culture-induced silence is breaking in Lagos,” Vivour-Adeniyi stated. “More survivors are stepping forward because they know the state government will provide legal, medical, and psychological support while ensuring perpetrators face justice.”
​To tackle the ongoing trend, the state government announced plans to expand its community-level advocacy, establish additional survivor shelter facilities, and strengthen joint operations with the Lagos State Police Command to ensure swift interventions.
