Eight-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi officially announced his retirement from international football on Monday, August 31, 2026, closing the curtain on a legendary 20-year career with the Argentina national team.
The 39-year-old captain confirmed the news in an emotional statement shared on his official Instagram account.
“It was a decision that hurt and still hurts deep in my soul but I understand that it is the right time,” Messi wrote. “To wear this shirt for two decades was the greatest honor of my life.”
Messi’s final appearance for La Albiceleste came on Sunday, July 19, 2026, during the FIFA World Cup 2026 final at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
