The Students’ Union Government (SUG) of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), Ogun State, has called for clarity over the reported rescue of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members who were abducted in Kogi State. The students’ body made the call amid conflicting reports surrounding the circumstances of the corps members’ reported rescue and their current status.
The SUG said the development had generated concerns among students and members of the university community, particularly over the safety and wellbeing of the affected corps members. It urged the relevant authorities to provide accurate and timely information on what happened, including details of the reported rescue and the measures taken to secure the victims.
According to the students’ union, clear communication from the authorities was necessary to prevent the spread of misinformation and speculation surrounding the incident. It stressed that families, friends and members of the university community deserved to know the actual situation concerning the corps members, particularly given the circumstances under which they were abducted.
The SUG also called on the authorities responsible for the security and welfare of NYSC members to provide adequate protection for corps members serving across the country. It noted that corps members were deployed to different parts of Nigeria as part of their national service and should be able to carry out their duties without being exposed to unnecessary security risks.
The students’ body urged the relevant authorities to clarify the reported rescue and provide updates on the condition and whereabouts of the affected corps members. It further called for stronger security measures to prevent similar incidents, stressing the need to prioritise the safety of corps members throughout their service year.
