Amnesty International Nigeria has called on Nigerian authorities to thoroughly and effectively investigate a viral video allegedly showing the Borno State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Sainna Buba, threatening political opponents with punishment if they refused to support the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The organisation said the alleged remarks raised concerns about political intimidation and the protection of citizens’ rights in the state.
Amnesty International Nigeria made the call following the circulation of the video on social media, where the commissioner was allegedly seen making threats against individuals perceived to be opposed to the APC. The organisation stressed the need for the authorities to establish the authenticity and circumstances surrounding the video and determine whether any offence had been committed.
The rights group said public officials had a responsibility to respect fundamental human rights and uphold the principles of democratic participation, regardless of political affiliation. It warned that threats or intimidation directed at political opponents could undermine citizens’ freedom to participate in political activities and express their views without fear of retaliation.
Amnesty International Nigeria therefore urged the relevant authorities to conduct an independent, impartial and effective investigation into the allegations. It said the investigation should establish the facts surrounding the commissioner’s alleged statements and ensure that anyone found to have violated the law was held accountable in accordance with due process.
The organisation also called on the authorities to protect citizens from intimidation and ensure that political participation remained free from threats and coercion. It maintained that government officials must respect the rights of political opponents and other citizens, stressing that accountability and respect for human rights were essential to strengthening Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
