The Rotary Club of Abuja, Central Business District (CBD) has distributed free delivery items to no fewer than 150 pregnant women at the Primary Health Care Centre, Ruga Juli in Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.
The President of the Club, Rhoda Mando during the distribution of the items on Saturday, said the club was at the facility for a maternal and child healthcare outreach/project.
According to her, the activity is one of the major cardinal projects of the club in 2026.
“We want to make it seamless for pregnant women to be able to have some basic necessary things that they need during child delivery.
“It’s not just that; we also provided mosquito nets for them, disinfectant, detergent and lots of things that will ease their delivery.
“Because of this present economy challenge, we decided that we need to do that. And more so, the district has different activities for every month.
“July was the month of maternal healthcare, but as a club, we had planned that we’ll do it in August.
“That is when it’s convenient for our host in Ruga Juli, a remote area in Nasarawa State.
“In fact, we were informed that the women here don’t have anything. Nobody has come to do anything like this. The road is not even good, but we had to come like that,” Mando said.
She described the turn out of the women as overwhelming and encouraging.
“We were able to reach between 150 to 200 women in this facility. The next will also be a rural community in the FCT, because, that’s where they really need those assistance”
The president admonished the beneficiaries to  take care of their health and keep their environment clean.
“When you give birth to a child, you need that environment to be clean. And with the kits they got from the club, I’m sure it will help them during delivery.
“You know, sometimes, they spread their wrappers on the bed before the delivery, but with the kits/items we gave them, it will be easy for them,,” Mando said.
She further explained that before coming to render assistance, the club usually carry out needs assessment of the community, which she said to must fall within the seven cardinal points of the club.
“For example, when we get to water and sanitation, we will go and look for a community that has that need. That’s how we do. For Ruga Juli is maternal and child health”
The Community Leader of Ruga Juli, Mr Suleiman Salihu, expressed gratitude to the Rotary Club of Abuja CBD for the humanitarian gesture to his people.
” For rendering such assistance to our pregnant women, we are grateful.
“May God strengthen the Club to continue to do more for our women. This is the first time I was called to come and witness such good deeds for my people,” Salihu said.
The beneficiaries appreciated the Rotary Club for rendering such assistance to them
A beneficiary, Hajiya Hassana Aliyu, thanked the club for the gifts to her and other pregnant women in the community.
“I am so happy that I was given these delivery items.
“By God’s grace, during delivery, we can pack them to the hospital to have a safe delivery. We appreciate those that made this possible,” Aliyu said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that not fewer than 40 nursing mothers were also given free mosquito treated nets and other items for them and their children.
