The Lagos State Government has announced plans to deploy 220 newly acquired compactor trucks to strengthen waste evacuation and improve environmental sanitation across the state.
​The Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, made this disclosure on Saturday, August 29, 2026, during the monthly environmental sanitation exercise held in Festac Town, within the Amuwo-Odofin Local Government Area.
​Speaking to journalists during the exercise, Hamzat explained that the additional vehicles will complement the existing Private Sector Participation (PSP) waste collection system, expanding the state’s capacity to manage refuse in response to rapid population growth.
​”The state government will be bringing in another 220 trucks to make sure that we supplement our PSP,” Hamzat stated. “A lot of people are coming to Lagos, and therefore they generate waste. So part of what you can see that we are doing is that we are getting many more trucks to actually go and evacuate.”
​The Deputy Governor cautioned residents against relying on unaccredited cart pushers, warning that unregulated operators frequently dump refuse in drainage channels and canals, which obstructs stormwater flow and worsens flooding during heavy rainfall. He urged Lagosians to patronize authorized PSP operators and take personal responsibility for keeping their surroundings clean.
​Also addressing newsmen at the venue, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, highlighted ongoing state interventions to address landfill challenges and streamline logistics.
​Wahab noted that the state is transitioning from a traditional linear disposal model toward a circular economy focused on waste recovery and resource conversion. He added that 24-hour emergency response teams are active to close evacuation gaps and ensure cleaner communities.
