Fiscal discipline: Ondo reduces domestic debt by 82.6%, attracts $4bn investment proposals, creates 6,000 jobs

The Ondo State Government has announced an 82.6% reduction in its domestic debt profile over the past 18 months, alongside securing $4 billion in proposed investments and generating over 6,000 jobs across key sectors.

​The Chief Press Secretary to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, Ebenezer Adeniyan, disclosed these milestones during a quarterly media briefing on Friday, August 28, 2026, held at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Press Centre in Akure.

​According to Adeniyan, the 82.6% debt reduction stands as the highest percentage drop achieved by any state in the federation within the timeframe, driven by strict fiscal discipline, prudent resource management, and optimized debt servicing under the administration’s “OUR EASE” agenda.

In addition to debt management, the state has cleared outstanding salary arrears owed to public workers and political office holders, as well as pension gratuities.

​Achievements Highlighted by the Administration include Domestic debt fell by 82.6%, while more than 6,000 personnel, including 2,000 healthcare professionals, were recruited to bolster education, healthcare, agriculture, and security.

Ondo State has attracted foreign and domestic interest, including a major $4 billion petrochemical, fertilizer, and cement proposal, alongside plans for a 500,000-barrel-per-day refinery and a 1,471-hectare Free Trade Zone in Ilaje.

The state executive council approved a $1.6 million, 350-kilowatt hydropower project and a 7.5-megawatt gas-fired turbine to power public facilities, complemented by the installation of 5,000 solar streetlights.

Over ₦10 billion has been committed to boosting agriculture and rural access roads, while youth empowerment programs and interest-free loans continue to support micro-enterprises across all 18 local government areas.

​The administration reiterated its commitment to sustaining fiscal health while pursuing high-impact industrialization projects, positioning Ondo State as a prime investment destination in South-West Nigeria.
