Nigeria and the Kingdom of Thailand have agreed to elevate their bilateral partnership beyond traditional trade, pivoting toward deep-market collaboration in renewable energy, information technology, agriculture, and commerce.
​The policy shift was formalized on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, during a high-level diplomatic audience at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. Speaking on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima emphasized that while historic trade in crude oil and rice laid a strong foundation, both economies must now adapt to modern growth drivers.
​”I believe that our relationship should go beyond transactions in crude oil, rice production and so on. So, there is a need for us to review our bilateral relationship at a strategic level,” Shettima said.
Pointing to Nigeria’s demographic strength, large consumer market, and natural resource wealth, he pitched the nation as a premier hub for Thai investors seeking high-impact opportunities in solid minerals and clean energy.
​The Thai delegation was led by Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Yousef Hassan Khalawi (Sihasak Phuangketkeow), who chose Nigeria for his inaugural official visit to Africa.
​Khalawi unveiled the Thailand-Africa Initiative, a diplomatic framework designed to expand trade networks, support e-commerce, and build people-to-people relations across the continent.
​”For us in Thailand, we believe that Nigeria is a strategic partner bilaterally and an important window to strengthening ties with Africa, particularly West Africa,” Khalawi noted, positioning Nigeria as a leading voice in the Global South.
He outlined Thailand’s readiness to transfer intermediate agricultural technologies while exploring joint ventures in universal health coverage and tourism.
​Senior officials present at the State House session included; Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications (Office of the Vice President), Ambassador Dunoma Umar Ahmed, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Nigeria) and Mr. Thirapath Mongkolnavin, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Thailand to Nigeria.
​Both governments concluded the session by agreeing to set up sector-specific working groups to begin implementing joint commercial projects before the end of the current fiscal year.
