Nigeria’s new High Commissioner to India pledges stronger trade, economic ties

In a move to expand economic collaboration across the Global South, Nigeria’s newly accredited High Commissioner to India, Ambassador Saidu Dahiru Muhammad, has pledged to aggressively strengthen economic, trade, and investment cooperation between both countries.

​The commitment was delivered on Monday, August 24, 2026, during a formal credential presentation ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi. Ambassador Muhammad presented his Letters of Credence to the President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, alongside diplomats from South Sudan, the United Arab Emirates, Moldova, Germany, and Sweden.

​Delivering warm greetings from Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, Ambassador Muhammad underscored that his primary directive centers on actionable economic diplomacy and structured commercial partnerships.

​The envoy outlined specific target sectors designed to spur mutual development such as Pharmaceuticals & Healthcare; Accelerating technology transfers, joint ventures, and medical infrastructure development.

In the Technology & Agriculture sector; Partnering on digital transformation initiatives, research, and modern agri-business techniques. Facilitating market entry for Nigerian businesses in India while drawing foreign direct investment (FDI) into Nigerian manufacturing, energy, and infrastructure and building direct business-to-business (B2B) networks between Nigerian and Indian business leaders.

​The ceremony was attended by dignitaries including Nigeria’s Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, as well as the High Commissioner’s spouse, Mrs. Rukayya S.D. Muhammad.

​Welcoming the Nigerian delegation, President Droupadi Murmu commended the long-standing bilateral relationship built on mutual respect and trade.

​President Murmu pointed to India’s position as one of Nigeria’s foremost trading partners, acknowledging the significant contributions of Indian investors already operating within Nigeria. She reiterated that immense growth potential remains untapped, expressing confidence that Ambassador Muhammad’s tenure would mark a productive chapter for economic and cultural ties.
