Aggrieved governorship aspirant of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun State, Hon. Abayomi Hunye, has declared that his ongoing legal challenge against the outcome of the party’s governorship primary is aimed at seeking justice and restoring internal democracy, rather than undermining the party.
​Addressing supporters and journalists over the weekend in Abeokuta, Hunye clarified his position following recent public backlash and party sanctions, confirming that he remains actively in the race and has not stepped down.
​”For the avoidance of doubt, I have never declared myself candidate outside legal channels, nor am I attempting to destabilize the party,” Hunye stated. “My position has consistently been clear: the matter remains before a court of competent jurisdiction, and the issues surrounding the emergence of the party’s governorship candidate are still subject to judicial determination. Victory will be ours at the end of the day.”
Hunye unveiled Otunba Abdulfalil Abayomi Odunowo as his chosen running mate during a briefing. He maintained that his suit directly challenges the primary results that declared Senator Adeola Solomon Olamilekan (“Yayi”) as the candidate, questioning the legitimacy of the nomination process and raising concerns regarding regional indigeneity claims.
Speaking from the APC National Secretariat on Monday, August 24, in Abuja, National Secretary Senator Surajudeen Ajibola Basiru issued an official statement disowning Hunye’s actions. Basiru stated that Hunye lacks legal standing to act on behalf of the party, citing his prior suspension on April 7, 2026, initiated by Tube Ward in Ipokia LGA and ratified by the Ogun State Working Committee over alleged anti-party conduct.
The national leadership reaffirmed Senator Adeola Solomon Olamilekan and Balogun Kudirat Abiodun as the party’s validly nominated candidate and running mate for the upcoming 2027 governorship election. The APC noted that their official profiles were formally submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) portal on Friday, August 7, 2026, at 6:08 p.m.
Escescalating the conflict, APC Director of Administration Ayoola Olajolo confirmed that the party submitted a formal petition to the Inspector-General of Police in Abuja on Tuesday, August 25. The petition calls for the immediate investigation and prosecution of Hunye over alleged impersonation and acts capable of causing a breach of public peace.
Former federal lawmaker and Ogun APC chieftain Kayode Oladele described Hunye’s running mate unveiling as an “exercise in futility,” reiterating that the party has moved forward with its recognized ticket.
​Despite the petition and party warnings, Hunye’s camp expects the court to hear their primary challenge this week, maintaining that only a definitive judicial ruling can resolve the crisis within the state chapter.
