The Sokoto State Government has disbursed over ₦100 million in financial aid alongside 408 bags of assorted food items to cushion the effect of tragic events that recently hit families in the Wurno and Goronyo Local Government Areas.

The combined interventions target households affected by banditry and the recent boat mishap that claimed several lives in the region. The relief packages were announced on Monday morning, August 24, 2026, at the local government headquarters in Wurno and Goronyo during a condolence and outreach visit by a high-powered state government delegation.

The delegation was led by the leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Sokoto State and former Governor, Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko.

Speaking on behalf of the delegation at the Wurno Local Government Secretariat, Senator Wamakko expressed the state government’s profound condolences to the grieving families and reiterated Governor Ahmed Aliyu’s commitment to citizen welfare.

”The Sokoto State Government stands firmly with the people of Wurno and Goronyo during this difficult period,” Senator Wamakko stated. “This financial assistance and food aid are part of immediate measures to relieve the socio-economic burdens placed on these families by acts of violence and unfortunate mishaps.

The administration remains resolved in partnering with federal security forces to restore total peace to our communities.”

Also speaking at the event, the State Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs and Social Welfare, who served as the official government spokesperson for the exercise, outlined the breakdown of the distribution.

The ₦100 million was disbursed directly to victims’ families, divided between next-of-kin of those deceased and injured individuals receiving medical treatment. 408 bags of essential grains, including rice, millet, and maize, supplied to ease immediate food insecurity among affected households.

Local leaders and community representatives present at both venues expressed gratitude to the Sokoto State Government and the delegation for the swift response, appealing for continued operational security to prevent future insurgent raids and water transport accidents.
